Very helpful for writers and future career writers. Plus the professor is extremely down to earth. Was not expecting that and I forgive her for being a Duke fan. Go Tar Heels!!!! jk jk

Everything was great! (I know we're not supposed to say that, but it fits.) The only minuses: (1) Many of the online resources are outdated. (2) Because the course is so old, the interaction on the forums was not very lively. However, that is not why I'm taking the course. The positives: (1) Denise Comer is very good teacher. She comes across as empathetic toward her students, and interested in their progress. She's not afraid to contradict some of the reigning ideas about good writing and give her own opinions, many of which I shared. (2) The content - short lectures, mini-quizzes to keep us attentive. (3) The assignments - clearly defined, excellent rubrics, but still allowing freedom of expression. (4) "Guest" writers and speakers to keep things varied and to draw on their expertise. The "op-ed" mand especially! That's all I have to say, but thank you to Duke and Coursera for an excellent and free resource.

English Composition I is an extremely detailed, comprehensive, easy-to-follow and well-thought-out course to help aspiring writers as well as academicians. Dr. Denise Comer, the course instructor, has a very engaging style. She is also very encouraging and makes everything sound very easy, which makes one confident that he/she can do well. Other experts have also shared their insight through videos which are very helpful. Readings and various websites provide guidance and assistance throughout the learning process. The grading system is also thorough. I suggest that if possible, lowest scoring students should be given some kind of a personalized feedback in order to encourage them to do better or address their weak areas. I will definitely recommend this course to other people.
